Breaking Down the iPayment Project: A Government-Scale Data Win

I recently wrapped up the iPayment project for the Accountant General’s Department of Malaysia (JANM), and honestly, seeing this go live was a massive “win” moment. Working alongside Censof Holdings Berhad and Century Software, I stepped in as the lead Power BI developer to tackle a pretty significant challenge: making sense of high-stakes government financial data.

Here is what went down from my perspective behind the scenes:

The View from the Dev Bench

  • Dashboards that actually talk: Instead of static numbers, we built real-time Power BI visualizations. It’s one thing to see a report; it’s another to watch financial trends move in real-time so the department can make calls on the fly.
  • The “Magic” in the DAX: I spent a lot of time in the weeds with advanced DAX measures. We weren’t just tracking totals—we were surfacing payment efficiencies and compliance indicators that usually stay buried in the noise.
  • Data you can trust: In government fintech, “close enough” doesn’t exist. I focused heavily on the ETL processes and validation to ensure that what showed up on the screen was 100% airtight for financial reporting.
  • The Human Factor: The best part was the iteration. Working directly with the users at JANM meant the final product wasn’t just technically sound—it actually solved the specific friction points they faced daily.

The Bigger Picture

This project was a masterclass in blending technical Power BI skills with the unique requirements of the public sector. Seeing a robust BI solution streamline operations for a major government body is a great reminder of why I love data: it’s about turning complexity into clarity.

When a “Small Change” Turns into a Big Strategic Ask

“Vishva, I have one more change… just one small widget for the leadership dashboard.”

We’ve all received that “just one small change” email. In this case, the business called it a Big Ask. Why? Because it wasn’t just a visual update—it was a request for Integrated Visibility and Dynamic Security.

The leadership team was struggling with fragmented data. They couldn’t see critical employee review cycles and milestones in one place to plan effectively. Furthermore, the data was sensitive; it required strict Row-Level Security (RLS) to ensure managers only saw data relevant to their own direct reports.

In today’s landscape, technical depth alone isn’t enough—you need velocity. Instead of brute-forcing the DAX and security roles, I leveraged Generative AI to rapidly prototype the nested IF/BLANK conditional measures.

By integrating AI into my data engineering workflow, I turned a “Big Ask” into a rapid, secure, and successful implementation in a fraction of the traditional time.

Is your data helping you plan, or is it just sitting in a silo?

Client Excellence Award 2026 certificate from Excelencia
🏆 Award

I Won an Award. Here’s the Real Story Behind It.

“Vishva, quick call?” — looks at clock — 10 PM. Also me: “Say less!!”

I won the Client Excellence Award 2026 from Excelencia. Apparently, being the person who actually picks up late-night change requests has its perks. Who knew?

That exchange above? That’s been the vibe all year. And honestly, I wouldn’t have it any other way.

The Standard I Hold Myself To

I was usually the youngest in the room. Stakeholder calls, sprint reviews, client walkthroughs… and I showed up every single time ready to deliver. Not just what was asked — but better than what was asked. Because that’s just the standard I hold myself to.

The real cherry on top? A client dropped the nicest feedback I’ve ever received — basically saying I don’t just build what’s asked, I actually improve it before writing a single line.

“That right there? That’s the real award.”

None of This Was Solo

  • Logitha B — did the heavy lifting alongside me, matched the energy every single time, and made sure the quality never slipped. This award has your fingerprints all over it. Thank you!!
  • Karthikeyan Sundar & Sunil Gangadharan — thanks for trusting me with the big rooms. That trust? I don’t take it lightly, and I hope the results showed that.

A Note for Anyone Early in Their Career

If you’re early in your career and feeling like you don’t belong in the room yet — stay anyway. Do the work. Ask the “silly question” that actually saves the project. The recognition shows up eventually. Usually with a certificate and a blog post.

Grateful. Motivated. Just getting started. 🚀
